Facebook, the international social network, has closed a networking page started in Ireland that asked dissident Irish republicans to post the pictures and personal details of Northern Irish police officers.

Facebook closed down the page this week when Northern Irish police members and politicians complained about it.

Called Crown Forces Watch, the page was seen as an intelligence-gathering forum for Irish Republican Army dissidents.

Dissident groups are still plotting attacks on police officers, especially when they're off duty and most vulnerable to attack. In April of 2011 a policeman was killed when a car bomb exploded under his car outside his home.
