The Irish editor of the Mail on Sunday has been warned his phone may have been hacked by the News of the World.

Sebastian Hamilton was contacted by British police last week as they investigate the hacking scandal that has rocked Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation.

Scotland Yard agents found Hamilton’s details on documentation belonging to shamed private detective Glenn Mulclaire during their investigations into the activities of the now defunct News of the World.

Mulclaire is believed to have accessed the phone details of up to 4,000 individuals during his time in the pay of the Murdoch-controlled paper.

Hamilton, now editor of the Mail’s Sunday operation in Dublin, was the news editor of the British edition at the time of the alleged hacking.

The Mail on Sunday has confirmed that two of its senior journalists, including Hamilton, were contacted by police last week and made aware their names were included on Mulclaire’s list of hacking targets.

Hamilton has confirmed to Sky News that his voicemails may have been accessed by Mulclaire to glean information about his stories, or to try and access sensitive commercial data that could have been stored in his voicemail.

Fellow Mail executive journalist Dennis Rice is considering taking legal action against the News of the World and Hamilton may follow suit.

Mulclaire has already served time in a British prison for hacking into phones belonging to members of the UK’s Royal family.

Ironically, stories in London claim the Mail group is about to launch a red top tabloid next weekend to fill the void in the market left by the closure of the News of the World.

British Prime Minister David Cameron is also under renewed pressure concerning his relationship with the former News of the World editor Andy Coulson.

It has now emerged that Cameron has met top executives from Murdoch’s News International organization 26 times in the 15 months since taking power.

Coulson, former NI chief executive Rebekah Brooks and Murdoch’s son James were all entertained by Cameron at his country residence Chequers.
