Instead she will be buried today with thousands in attendance in the little town of Ballygawley in Tyrone where she hailed from. Crowds expected are so large that special policing has to put in operation.
All weekend thousands streamed to her parent’s house to pay their respects. She was laid out in her wedding dress.
Among those who paid their respects were First Minister Peter Robinson and Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness . Today Irish president Mary McAleese is attending the funeral.
Her cortege will be flanked by her husband John McAreavey’s Gaelic football team and pupils from the high school where she taught.
Her rosary beads, a pioneer pin denoting she never drank alcohol, a Tyrone football jersey and a Gaelic inscribed ring showing her love for the Irish language were due to placed on the altar.
Cardinal Sean Brady was due to be in attendance at the funeral mass celebrated by her husband’s uncle Bishop John McAreavey, who married the couple on December 30.
More details of her final moments have been revealed by police in Mauritius who say she surprised the hotel employees as they were stealing money from her purse.
One of them grabbed her in a choke hold from behind and strangled her. Her husband, John McAlreavey came back to the room ten minutes later and found her dead.
