The 19th century Adare Manor, once home to the Earl of Dunraven, has been put up for sale for $33 million (€25 million).

This 62-bedroom luxury hotel and golf resort is a sparkling gem of Irish tourism – it occupies 766 acres of land and includes an 18-hole championship golf course.

Located on the banks of the Maigue River in Adare, Co. Limerick, the stately manor was designed by architect James Pain in 1830 for Valentine Quin, the Earl of Dunraven and Mount-Earl.

In 1832, the second Earl of Dunraven rebuilt the home into a large Tudor manor that provided surrounding villagers with labor during the Great Hunger.

Irish American investment banker Tom Kane bought the manor in 1987 for just $2.6 million.

“A friend of mine told me about Adare Manor, which had been put on the market by Earl Thady Dunraven. On a lark within 40 minutes, I put a bid of $2.6 million, and the following day I was the proud owner,” Kane told the Irish Examiner. “I hadn’t even seen a picture of it.”

The manor began with fifteen rooms; within eight or so years Kane had it transformed into a 62-room luxury hotel with a top-class golf course designed by Robert Trent Jones.

Since Kane opened it for business in 1988, Adare Manor has housed many reputable names like Bill and Hillary Clinton and many other heads of state – golf champions Tiger Woods and Mark O’Meara also stayed at the manor during the 2010 J.P. McManus golf classic.
