Senator David Norris, who is in the middle of a campaign to seek nomination for the upcoming presidential election, wants the new terminal at the airport, which is currently called “Terminal 2,” to be changed.

Norris, an expert on all things Joycean, was at the terminal on Bloomsday (June 16) to give a reading from Ulysses.

"Dublin has been recognized as a UNESCO City of Literature, but what a boring name for a terminal at an airport: Terminal 2 -- Can we not do better?" he said according to the Evening Herald.

Joyce told those present that Jimmy Deenihan, the minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, had already pledged his support for the initiative, and that he also planned to ask the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport Leo Varadkar and the Seanad to do the same.

Fellow Senator Fidelma Healy Eames is supporting Norris, saying the name change to Joyce would be apt given that Dublin is a UNESCO city of literature.

The decision to change the name of the airport rests with the Irish administration.

“It would be the Government that would decide. At the moment, it's just Terminal 1 and Terminal 2," said Siobhan Moore of the Dublin Airport Authority.

Efforts have been made in the past to change the name of the airport, but none have come to fruition.

"Ultimately it would be a matter for Government, a Cabinet decision, but we would be interested in hearing proposals,” says Nick Miller, spokesman for the Department of Transport.
