Anthony McGwynne of Loughanelton, Co Sligo, died when the motorcycle he was traveling on was struck by a car in Vancouver on Thursday, July 4 2024. 

The collision occurred at approximately 9.30 pm, and despite countless efforts from bystanders and paramedics, the University of Limerick Law graduate was pronounced deceased at the scene. 

The Sligo native is survived by his loving family, his parents Tony and Bernadette, his siblings James, Maeve and Matthew, and his partner Antonella. 

His RIP.ie funeral notice reads: "Dearly loved son of Tony and Bernadette, brother of James, Maeve and Matthew and partner of Antonella. Sadly missed by his loving family, partner, grandmother Mary, step-brothers, step-sisters, uncles, aunts, cousins, relatives, neighbors, his close friends in Vancouver and many friends.’"

The Provost and Deputy President of the University of Limerick, Shane Kilcommons, led tributes to the "bright young man", writing: "On behalf of the University of Limerick, I would like to express my sincere condolences on the sudden passing of Anthony."

He continued: "The thoughts and prayers of the University community are with the McGwynne family, his partner Antonella and many friends at this sad time. Ar Dheis Dé go raibh sé."

Friends and members of the local Loughanelton community also paid tribute to the college graduate, along with the family of late friend Brad Duffy, who also passed away suddenly in Vancouver in 2023, writing: "Our sincere condolences to Bernadette, Tony, James, Maeve, Mathew, and his girlfriend Antonella on the tragic and sudden passing of your beloved son Anthony.

"He was a great friend to our late son Brad throughout their time in U.L. and then on their big adventure in Vancouver. Our thoughts are with you all. May Anthony’s beautiful soul rest easy," they added. 

Another remembered the "funny and kind" man who was an avid University of Limerick Kayak Club member.

She wrote: "Condolences to Antonella and the McGwynne family on the passing of Anthony. I met Anthony through UL Kayak in my 1st year; he was always lovely, funny, and kind. RIP."
 
A third friend wrote, "Anthony McGwynne was one of the best friends anyone could have wished for. He was funny, caring, and adventurous. He made you laugh if you were sad, always cheering people up and looking after others."

He continued: "He was not just a good friend but a great man and truly was one of a kind. You were an absolute gentleman who will always be missed but never forgotten. My heart goes out to his family and those close to him; may he rest in peace."

 Anthony will rest at his home in Co Sligo between 4 pm and 8 pm on July 21 and 22, with the family home strictly private at all other times. His funeral mass will take place on Tuesday, July 23, at noon in the Church of Saint Joseph, Ballytivnan, Co Sligo. His burial will take place in Clogher New Cemetery in Calry, Co Sligo, following his funeral.

His RIP.ie notice read: "Reposing at his home (F91Y5N5) on Sunday, July 21st, from 4 pm until 8 pm and on Monday, July 22nd, from 4 pm until 8 pm. Family home private outside of reposing times. Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated on Tuesday, July 23rd, at noon in Saint Joseph’s Church, Ballytivnan, Sligo."
