The incident occurred on Monday afternoon at Mountjoy Square in Dublin City Centre. The five-month-old girl was missing for over two hours before gardaí managed to recover her, with an urgent Child Rescue Ireland (CRI) alert being issued just before 4pm on Monday.

Gardai [Irish police] said they had "serious concerns that there is an immediate and serious risk to the health or welfare" of the baby girl.

The CRI alert was canceled and gardaí announced that the girl had been found "safe and well in Dublin city center", along with the silver Nissan Qashqai later that afternoon.

Gardai have now arrested a man as part of the investigation.

A Garda spokesperson said: "Gardaí have arrested a man as part of the investigation into the hijacking of a vehicle in Mountjoy Square, Dublin 1 on Monday afternoon, 23rd September 2024.

"The man (aged in his 40s) was arrested this evening for an offense contrary to the Criminal Law (Jurisdiction) Act, 1976, the Unlawful Seizure of Vehicles. He is currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984, at a Garda station in North Dublin.’

They added that investigations are ongoing.
