The hero of the Irish hour was Robbie Brady, who was on the end of a Wes Hoolahan pass deep inside the Italian goal territory and reached up and headed it home in the 85th minute.

Just moments before, Hoolahan had missed what seemed a certain goal and Ireland’s hopes looked slim as they had to defeat Italy in order to advance to the last 16 . It was reminiscent of Ireland’s most famous victory, when they also defeated Italy in the World Cup in Giants Stadium, NJ in 1994 when, similarly, a single goal saw them through.
A fantastic result!!!

Ireland was by far the better of the two teams and were denied a certain penalty in the first half, when James McClean was pushed off the ball inside the penalty area.

Ireland will now play another game on Sunday, facing the French team on their native turf in Lyon. With them and Northern Ireland, who will face Wales this weekend, both in the last 16, it is in incredible achievement for both teams on the island Ireland.
