Irish emigrants in Australia have criticized a current affairs TV show for broadcasting a report which highlighted the antics of drunken Irish people.
Channel Nine’s ‘A Current Affair‘ program broadcast a six-minute report featuring drunk and disorderly “guests in our country” who were creating hell for local residents who lived in Sydney’s Bondi Junction.
The report featured secretly filmed footage of the exterior of an Irish bar, captured over a seven day period.
“The first secretly filmed footage that will disgust you; it features guests in our country, drunk, out of control and treating our neighborhoods like slums,” the report began.
With a backing track of traditional Irish music, the report showed several late night drunken disputes outside the Cock n Bull pub.
When one local resident was asked by the reporter who these people were, she told the news program that the majority of them were Irish.
“Well a lot of them are Irish, I have to say.”
One Irish man interviewed by the show agreed with the residents claims, that the situation had got out of hand.
“Of course they hate us, they definitely hate us,” he told the reporter.
“It’s like a mad house down there, it’s like an insane asylum,” he added.
Another resident told the current affairs show that this type of behavior was unacceptable.
“Pubs in Dublin, ya they are noisy, but they are not like this. These people would get turfed out of those pubs in a flash and I am sure they couldn’t get away with it in County Kerry or wherever they come from.”
Irish pats living in Sydney have responded to the claims, insisting that it is not just Irish immigrants who are responsible for anti social behavior in this area.
On Irish shores, people responded to the news report on one of the country’s most popular radio talk shows “Liveline”.
Callers to the talk show disputed how dangerous the area was and how culpable the Irish population were.
