Online voting is underway in the Irish Presidential election through BallotBox.ie, a website which allows Irish citizens abroad to cast a symbolic virtual vote in the upcoming election.

Irish citizens who currently reside outside of the 26 counties are unable to cast their votes abroad under current law.

Voting got underway on Tuesday October 18. Irish emigrants abroad can log on and register until voting closes next Wednesday. Polling day in Ireland will take place this coming Thursday, October 27.

Brian Reynolds, BallotBox co-founder, currently living in Toronto, said that the response so far has been remarkable.

“From Tanzania to Nepal we have had over 1,500 Irish emigrants register at BallotBox.ie for their chance to have their say in the Presidential election,” he told Irish Central.

“Even today we are hearing from Irish people who are finding out for the first time that they are not entitled to vote while they are abroad.

“It is clear that this is an issue many people want addressed,” the Meath man added.

An idea conceived by Irish emigrants, BallotBox was founded in the run up to the 2011 General Election. The website saw over 5,000 people all around the world cast a symbolic vote in the election.
