Officials in Spain are investigating after the body of an Irish woman was found in the water close to the Plaza del Mar in Isla Plana village.   

The body of an Irish woman has been found in Spain, officials have confirmed. The remains of the woman thought to be in her 50s were found in Isla Plana village in Cartagena city on Sunday morning.

"The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade cannot comment on individual cases, but can confirm that assistance is being provided to the family of an individual who passed away in Spain,” a spokesman for the Department of Foreign Affairs told Independent.ie.

The woman is believed to have been discovered by a dog walker near the Plaza del Mar. Her husband identified her remains.

While the Spanish Civil Guard will carry out an investigation into the woman’s death, it is understood that no foul play is suspected. It is thought that she had been holidaying in Spain.
