It is understood that emergency services were alerted to a serious incident at the Cliffs of Moher at approximately 2 pm on Saturday, November 9, after reports stated a woman’s body had been seen at the base of a cliff at Aill Na Searrach. Aill Na Searrach is located around 500 meters north of O’Brien’s Tower.

 Operation

The Coast Guard, RNLI and An Garda Síochána joined an operation mounted by the Irish Coast Guard’s marine rescue coordination centre from Valentia Island in Kerry.

The Aran Islands RNLI all-weather lifeboat and the Irish Coast Guard’s Doolin unit were also dispatched, while Rescue 115, a Coast Guard helicopter based in Shannon, was also called in to help with the operation.

After conducting a search, the Rescue 115 crew discovered the casualty at the foot of Aill Na Searrach, alerting the boat crews of their location.

It is believed that RNLI and Coast Guard teams completed a risk assessment before mounting an effort to recover the woman’s body — volunteers then approached the shore to recover the casualty.

The woman’s remains were transported to Doolin Pier where members of An Garda Síochána, a doctor and a local undertaker were waiting to remove the body to University Hospital Limerick after she was officially pronounced dead.

Post-mortem

It is believed that a post-mortem has been arranged and gardaí are yet to identify the woman involved.

A spokesperson for An Garda Síochána told Extra.ie: "Gardaí at Ennistymon and Coast Guard were alerted after the body of an adult female was recovered on the coastline at the Cliffs of Moher, Co. Clare shortly after 2:30 PM on Saturday, 9 November 2024."
