A day after Katie Taylor won gold for Ireland in the women’s Olympic lightweight boxing final, officials in her hometown of Bray say they’re planning a special welcome for her upon her return.
“We had an old booklet with plans if [her win] did happen so now we have to dust it down and see how practical it is,” Mick Glynn, Cathaoirleach of the Bray town council, told BreakingNews.ie.
But the Co Wicklow town will have to defer to the official recognition plans of the IOC for returning athletes, according to Glynn.
“We just have to dovetail in with the IOC to see what they’re going to do with the athletes when they get back to Ireland," he said.
Whatever the town does, it can expect a huge turnout: 10,000 people gathered to watch Taylor's victory earlier this week on huge public screens erected by the town, according to BreakingNews.ie.
