Father Brendan Fitzgerald has been formally recommended by New York State Attorney General Letitia James to become the next Chaplain of the Fire Department of New York (FDNY).

Fr Fitzgerald, a native of the Rockaways in Queens who was raised in Killarney, Co Kerry, is the pastor at St. Barnabas Church in the Woodlawn neighborhood of The Bronx, often known as 'Little Ireland.'

In her letter, which was shared with IrishCentral on Wednesday evening, Attorney General James wrote: "Father Brendan is a pillar of the New York City Community, serving as the pastor of St. Barnabas Church in the Bronx since 2016.

"He has a history of chaplaincy, including to the Hyde Park and Staatsburg Fire Departments, where he has proven himself to be an effective educator, counselor, administrator, and public servant.

"In New York City, he has built a solid track record of building trust and community within the FDNY. As Chaplain to the FDNY Emerald Society, FDNY Holy Name Society, and FDNY GAA, he has created strong and meaningful connections among members.

"Moreover, his extensive experience in grief and addiction counseling demonstrates his ability to support individuals in crisis. His calm demeanor and compassionate nature have positively impacted the lives of many.

"Father Brendan Fitzgerald possesses the experience, compassion, and dedication necessary to excel as an FDNY Chaplain. I am confident he would serve with distinction and make a meaningful contribution to the community."

AG James issued her recommendation on October 15, just a few days after the FDNY issued a job posting for a Chaplain position.

The job posting says in part: "The Fire Department, City of New York (FDNY), seeks a Chaplain in the Family Assistance Unit.

"Reporting directly to the Assistant Commissioner of Family Assistance, the successful candidate will provide spiritual guidance and moral support and conduct religious services as required.

"The Chaplain will administer rites and religious educational programs; make pastoral calls and counsel individuals and families regarding personal, moral and spiritual matters; maintain liaison and cooperative relationships with social service agencies and other community organizations."

According to the job posting, the salary for the role is in the $31.43 – $44.69 per hour range.
