Kevin Grogan speaks to IrishCentral about his past career as an Irish professional footballer, his hopes for Westchester SC and the importance of the local community.
Announced in 2024, Westchester SC is a homegrown pro soccer club in USL League One and will be playing their first home match for the 2025 season at Mount Vernon Memorial Field in New York on April 27. You can grab your tickets here and all games will be broadcast on MSG Networks.
Can you tell us a bit about your Irish background and your career in football?
I grew up in Dublin. We all played football on the streets and really enjoyed the national team doing so well in the European Championship in 1988, the World Cup in 1990 and 1994. Great times! I was very fortunate to be signed by Sir Alex Ferguson in 1995 when I was 15 years old. Playing at Manchester United in the late 90s was a special time. The highlight for the club was winning the treble in 1999. I was also very privileged to play for Ireland underage and win the European Championship in 1998 U16.

What led you to moving to New York in your twenties?
My career on the field was cut short due to a bad pelvis injury. After many operations I had to retire. I came to New York City to start a new life and try to live the American dream. I have been here 14 years now and feel blessed to live in America. It has given me some amazing opportunities and I've met some amazing people.
For anyone who might not know, can you explain the story behind Westchester SC?
Mitch Baruchowitz and Danny Dekker started Westchester SC. It was their brain child. It's been amazing how quickly they have got it up and running. Danny is a great football man. Mitch has had an incredible business career and has the courage to go for things. He doesn't waste time in his pursuits and is a mentor to many.
Simon Baines is our Sporting Director and has been phenomenal. Sara Whalen won the World Cup for America in 1999 and brings incredible insights. It's a really exciting team. The icing on the cake was getting Dave Carton as our head coach. He is young, dynamic and has all the tools to go to the top of the tree in football management.
What is your role within the club?
I am a small owner and adviser. I've seen football on the field as a player and former coach, and then I moved into business so I've seen that side also. I'm here to help and support many facets of the club.
What are the biggest goals Westchester SC hopes to achieve?
Community is everything and we want everyone to feel a part of the club. We are doing this through after-school programs and an upcoming special needs program. We want to be close to the community and the fans. It's a family club. We will win and lose together. As for the games, of course we want to win but that's a process for a new team. It's important we entertain the crowd and show a level of honesty and work ethic that represents the Westchester people.
How are you feeling ahead of the first home match on April 27th against Rhode Island FC at Mount Vernon Memorial Field, NY?
It will be an historic occasion. There is only ever one first home game. We have lots to do before then, but whatever happens on the day we will make sure we do the people of Westchester proud.
