Book of condolence on behalf of former Taoiseach Albert Reynolds
A book of condolence will be available on behalf of former Irish Taoiseach Albert Reynolds at the Consulate-General of Ireland offices from August 25th-August 27th.
Albert Reynolds, the former Irish Taoiseach (Prime Minister) who played an important role in forging peace in Northern Ireland, died on August 21 at his home in Dublin, Ireland. He was 81.
Despite a short tenure as Taoiseach, from 1992 to 1994, Reynolds left his mark on the country, with the 1993 signing of the Downing Street Declaration in London with his British counterpart, John Major. This historic occasion paved the way for an Irish Republican Army cease-fire the next year and a Loyalist cease-fire shortly afterward.
In a press statement, current Irish Taoiseach Enda Kenny said "As Taoiseach he [Reynolds] played an important part in bringing together differing strands of political opinion in Northern Ireland and as a consequence made an important contribution to the development of the peace process which eventually lead to the Good Friday Agreement."
American Vice President Joe Biden also paid tribute to the former Irish leader, saying "Taoiseach Reynolds knew that keeping of peace requires continuing commitment and constant attention. I urge today’s leaders to continue advancing the peace process in Northern Ireland, so that all of its citizens can live in the peaceful, prosperous, and shared community that Reynolds envisioned. "
The former Taoiseach, who had been suffering Alzheimer’s disease before his death, will receive a state funeral on August 25.
He is survived by his wife, Kathleen (nee Coen), and his two sons and five daughters.
Those wishing to pay their respects to Albert Reynolds, will be able to do so at the Consulate-General of Ireland offices (535 Boylston St, Boston, MA 02116) from Monday 25 August to Wednesday 27 August 2014, from 10am to 3pm.
