Ben Stiller and Co. better watch out: dodgeball is coming to Ireland.
Ireland’s first ever national dodgeball competition was announced Tuesday, and will take place in June 6 in Cork and June 13 in Dublin.
The tournament will see teams of six will fight it out for a place in the final and the top prize of €1,000 ($1,360).
Taking inspiration from the hit movie “Dodgeball”, which starred Stiller and Vince Vaughn, the organizers are asking teams to come up with the most outrageous outfits and team names.
One team from County Cork who have already entered are calling themselves “The Welly Warriors.” (A “welly” in Ireland is a slang term for a rain boot.)
Announcing details of the competition, the sponsors quoted legendary dodgeball champion Patches O’Houlihan from "Dodgeball", who told Vince Vaughn’s motley crew of dodgeball misfits, “If you're going to become true dodgeballers, then you've got to learn the five d's of dodgeball: Dodge, Duck, Dip, Dive & Dodge.”
According to Suzanne O’ Reilly, founder of the University College Dublin dodgeball club: “Usually Irish dodgeball teams have to travel to the U.K. to take part in competitions so it is fantastic to be able to play in an Irish competition.
"Sometimes people find competitive team sports intimidating or working-out in the gym boring. Dodgeball is easy to take up and no past dodgeballing experience is necessary for the Rennie Dual Action Dodgeball Challenge. Dodgeball is the greatest sport in the world!”
A spokeswoman for Rennie Dual Action told IrishCentral that with the stresses and strains of the current economic crisis taking their toll in Ireland, physical exercise was more important than ever.
And Stephanie Griffin, Irish brand manager for Rennie Dual Action, added: “This competition is a marvelous way for friends or colleagues to come together, have a fun-filled and stress-free day out while also helping to dodge unwanted health issues.”
