Former US President and current Republican candidate Donald Trump will visit Ireland next year, according to his son Eric.

Eric Trump, who is set to visit the Trump International Golf Links & Hotel in Doonbeg later in the week, told the Irish Independent that his father will visit Ireland next year, regardless of the outcome of the 2024 presidential election.

"My dad loves Ireland," Eric Trump told the Irish Independent.

"It’s very easy for a president to pop in for 15 minutes, wave to the masses, and leave. This is a guy and a family that has put millions of dollars of our money into your economy.

"I guarantee you he is going to be back in Ireland in the next year.

"I am personally going to bring him over there. He adores Doonbeg."

Eric Trump made similar comments in 2016, ahead of that year's US Presidential election - according to the Irish Independent at the time, Eric indicated that his father would return to Doonbeg many times as President.

Speaking to the Irish Independent this week, Eric reflected on his 2019 visit to Ireland with his father: "One of the greatest moments of my life was five years ago when we took off in Marine One from Doonbeg.

"We flew to Shannon, hopped on a plane, flew into Nice and then into Normandy and we landed on the beach of Normandy for the 75th anniversary of the invasion."

Eric and his brother Donald Jr were accused of stiffing a bar tab in Doonbeg during the visit five years ago, though pub owners later clarified that the bill was indeed paid.

Donald Trump last visited Doonbeg in May 2023. He visited Ireland in an official capacity as President of the United States in June 2019.

Eric also discussed the recent assassination attempt against his father and described the terror of watching the event live on air while he was at home with his family in Florida.

"As soon as I heard the first shots I knew," he told the Irish Independent, stating that his "heart sank" when he saw his father hit the ground and watched Secret Service agents jump on top of him.

He added that he has never been so proud of his father than the moment when he saw him raise his fist to the air and shout "fight, fight, fight."

However, he was also worried that Trump had been hit in the torso during the attack.

"He was wearing a dark suit. I didn’t know if he got hit in the torso. If he took a bullet somewhere in the chest. You just couldn’t know."

According to The Hill on Monday, Trump has a 2.0% lead nationally over presumed Democratic nominee Kamala Harris, based on 85 polls.
