A high-profile former politician faces more than ten years in prison for charges relating to migrant trafficking and possession of child pornography.

The man served as a local representative in the east of the country, but retired from politics many years ago.

However, he maintained a high-profile in another sector and contributed to media reports on occasion.

An investigation was launched more than three years ago after immigration officials at Dublin Airport raised their suspicions of alleged people-smuggling.

Numerous searches were carried out by gardaí in 2022, including at the ex-politician’s place of work. Several items were seized at the time, including mobile phones and laptops, for analysis.

Last year, gardaí arrested the Dublin-based man and questioned him about allegedly facilitating the entry of a migrant into Ireland. It’s understood that the man has previously denied any wrongdoing.

He is due to appear in court later this month.
