It's been two years since former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords miraculously survived the attack by crazed gunman Jared Loughner.

According to the Daily Mail, this week she and husband Mark Kelly will be interviewed by TV-anchor Diane Sawyer in a broadcast to mark the anniversary of the Tucson shooting.

Giffords, a visible reminder of the horror of gun violence, now campaigns for stronger gun control and will appear on World News with Sawyer on January 8, ABC News announced yesterday.

Last week Giffords and Kelly both visited Newtown, Connecticut to meet with families of last month's Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre that left 27 dead.

Giffords' visit came three weeks to the day that 20-year-old Adam Lanza killed his gun enthusiast mother Nancy Lanza, then killed 20 first graders and six school staff members before taking his own life as police arrived.

Following the shootings Giffords’ husband Kelly told the press it was time to 'stand up and do what is right.'

'This time our response must consist of more than regret, sorrow, and condolence. This can no longer wait,' he said in a personal statement on Facebook.

Kelly's wife Giffords retired from Congress last year to focus on her recovery. She had been shot in the head, left partially blind, with a paralyzed right arm and brain injury after the gunman opened fire at her constituent meet-and-greet outside a Tucson, Arizona grocery store.

Since the shooting Giffords has become a symbol for stricter gun control in a debate about the right to bear arms that has grown more urgent since the December 14 attack in Newtown.

On Thursday, the more than 400 children who escaped without physical harm returned to school for the first time since the assault.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Giffords and Kelly will speak to Sawyer about the new initiative they're launching to curb gun violence.

Giffords' appearance on the show has surprised many, since her public appearances have been few during her long recovery from the shooting.

Since her November 2011 she has only spoken publicly at the Democratic National Convention where she recited the Pledge of Allegiance.

Giffords met with New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg last week to discuss gun control before traveling to Newtown to meet with the families of the victims.
