An 11-year-old Irish girl has died after falling from a seventh-floor balcony at the Club Mac Hotel in Alcúdia, on the Spanish island of Mallorca.

“We are investigating the death of an 11-year-old Irish girl who died after plunging from a seventh-floor terrace at a hotel in Alcúdia," a spokesperson for Spain's Civil  Guard in Mallorca told The Irish Mirror on Monday.

"The first emergency calls came in around 6.45 this morning.”

The Irish Mirror further reports that local police in Alcúdia, who are employed by the town hall and were among the first on the scene, said in a statement: "Around 6:45 this morning an alert was received saying a person had fallen from the balcony of their apartment on the Mac Hotels hotel complex.

"Immediately officers from this police unit as well as the Civil Guard and paramedics went to the scene.

"Once they were there they discovered an 11-year-old Irish girl who was already dead and had fallen from a seventh-floor balcony for reasons which are still being investigated.

"We wish to send our condolences to the family of this young girl. Rest in peace."

According to The Mirror, the girl is understood to have fallen around 65 feet and landed on the roof of a first-floor restaurant.

The relatives of the young Irish girl are believed to have been asleep when the tragedy occurred, though police are still investigating.

The Irish girl was pronounced dead at the scene after resuscitation efforts from paramedics and other emergency responders.

An autopsy is expected to take place later on Monday at the Institute of Legal Medicine in Palma.

A regional emergency coordination center has offered trauma counselors to the Irish girl's family.

A spokesperson for Ireland's Department of Foreign Affairs told The Independent: “The Department of Foreign Affairs is aware of the case and is providing consular assistance.

"As with all consular cases, the department does not comment on the details of individual cases.”

The Mirror reports that one well-placed insider said: “The girl who died was one of three children.

"The family were due to return to Ireland today.

"The youngster’s parents were sleeping when she fell and had no idea what had happened until afterwards.”

A receptionist at Club Mac said on Monday morning that the resort was not commenting.
