Irish-born Suffolk County Police Commissioner Richard Dormer, who is leading the investigation into the Long island Ripper has , warned media at a recent press conference to "keep in mind that this is not an episode of "CSI"." He called on the media and the public to be patient and let the investigation run its course.
Forensic scientists and the police have warned against speculation over the identity of the Long Island killer as their teams continue to work on establishing the magnitude of the crime and the identity of all 10 sets of human remains found along the coast since last December.
On Friday police discovered two teeth near where one of the human skulls was discovered in Nassau County. However Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano said that while the find could mean new evidence in the case the medical examiner would have to determine if the teethe are human and they would then be handed over to the forensic scientists.
Kevin Smith, spokesperson for the police, cautioned the media against speculation. Speaking to CNN he pointed out that the two sets of remains found in Nassua had not even been classified as criminal homicide cases.
He said "Anybody who is making a profile (of a possible killer), it's pure speculation."
However, earlier in the investigation Richard Dormer did say that he believed remains of the eight women found in Suffolk County could be the work of a serial killer. He first mentioned this back in January when the police had only discovered four of the bodies during a search which was initially began for Shannan Gilbert.
Gilbert had been reported missing and was last seen in the area. She has not been found. Gilbert, along with the other eight victims found along the coast on Long Island, was a prostitute who advertised her services on the classifieds website Craigslist.
Suffolk County Detective Lt. Gerard Pelkofsky said "Common sense tells us it's not a coincidence."
