Constable Kevin Joseph Graham was the first person to arrive on the scene of a bloody shooting, saving a young man who had been shot five times, once through the neck.

A Canadian police officer who was born in Co Donegal is being hailed as a hero for saving the life of a young man in a Toronto shooting on August 15.

Constable Kevin Joseph Graham, who was born in Ireland and moved to Canada with his family in 1989, was the first at the scene of a bloody shooting in the Canadian city, springing into action to deliver medical attention to a man in his late twenties who had been shot through the neck.

“We received a call of reports of multiple gunshots and calls that it was believed someone had been struck by gunfire,” Graham told the Donegal Democrat.

“When I got there he was suffering severe blood loss from an arterial bleed from the neck. I applied pressure to the would and held on until the ambulance arrived. The paramedics just got him into the ambulance and got him out of there and brought him to the local area trauma center.

“Detectives at the scene and paramedics advised that the quick response and emergency first aid played a potential role in saving his life,” he added.

Yet, despite the crucial role that the Donegal man played in saving another’s life, he humbly commended his colleagues and teamwork in saving the victim, who is now in the hospital and expected to survive the incident.

“The colleagues that I work with - it's easy to go to work when you work with such a great team. Teamwork played a major role in the outcome of that event,” Graham said.

“Anyone who would have arrived on the scene first would have done the same thing that I did and it was down to teamwork, not an individual effort.”

Graham, originally from Ballyshannon, has been a police officer since 2006 and is a member of the 51st Division of the Toronto Police Service. Having moved to Canada with his parents Anne and the late Kevin, and siblings Kerry Jo, Orianna and Saoirse, Graham is said to return to Ireland every year or two.
