According to local media reports, the incident took place on Wednesday evening in the seaside village of Portu Maga.

L’Unione Sarda, the oldest newspaper in Sardinia, reported that a 62-year-old Irish woman was swept into the sea after waves crashed into the cliffs of Portu Maga.

The publication elaborated that a search and rescue operation was mounted immediately, with her body sadly being recovered later in the day by a specialist diver.

The Department of Foreign Affairs has said it is aware of the case and is providing consular assistance.

This tragic case marks the second tragedy to befall an Irish person in Sardinia in less than a week.

On Sunday, an Irish hiker was found dead after having been reported missing since last Friday.

It is understood that the man was hiking in the municipality of Iglesias, on the trail of the Cammino Minerio di Santa Barbara, between Masua and Cala Domestica.

The Irish native was on a walking trip with his family and went for a hike on his own at around 8am on Friday, where he sadly lost his life.
