Niall Murray, one of the Irish J-1 visa students injured in the balcony collapse in Berkeley that killed six in June, said at a news conference last week he felt guilty he lived when other young people died.
“I feel fortunate,” said Murray, with his doctor by his side. “I also feel guilty.”
Appearing in a wheelchair with bandages on his arms and a boot on his left foot, the 21-year-old thanked nurses, doctors and diplomatic officials for their help. Murray has been undergoing intensive rehabilitation and therapy at the Rehabilitation Center at Santa Valley Medical Center.
He talked about going home soon and seeing the families of those who died on June 16, when the balcony broke off an apartment building and fell five stories to the ground during a birthday party.
“I remember the night, the only thing I don’t remember is how I hit the ground,” said Murray.
Five of those killed in the accident were Irish students working in the San Francisco Bay Area for the summer. The sixth was an Irish American from California. Seven Irish students, including Murray, were severely injured.
"To our friends, we will miss you, we will always miss you, and we'll never forget you,” he said. ”Someday I look forward to seeing you all again."
