It comes as officers are growing increasingly frustrated by the limited cooperation from key figures in the investigation.

A senior security source revealed some witnesses in the case are "co-operating, but to a point", with detectives becoming exasperated by the lack of information forthcoming.

"Something happened"

Extra has learned that gardaí have been told "something happened" to Kyran, but beyond this, no further details have been provided. They have also been told people known to Kyran knew something had happened to him but pretended he was still alive to throw the authorities off.

A senior security source told Extra: "Gardaí will have to do something. This is being treated as a murder investigation, but gardaí are being stonewalled. One key witness is cooperating but to a point. They may have to make an arrest to try to move the investigation on."

The latest development in the case that has shocked the country comes as Justice Minister Helen McEntee this week refused to comment on reports that gardaí could be given power to compel witnesses to give information.
