New York Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney's decision not to enter a Senate race against Senator Kristen Gillibrand will not sit well in many Irish circles.
Gillibrand has failed to connect to a community that was very prepared to give her every chance when she took over.
Her past comments on undocumented immigrants did not play well with activists and Maloney, who is a far better known quantity in the community, was seen as a realistic alternative.
However, Maloney bowed to the inevitable given that Gillibrand will raise north of $40 million for her race, and she has the vital backing of Senator Chuck Schumer.
Schumer in her corner has ensured that no meaningful Democrat will now face off against Gillibrand.
However, her weakness in New York City might offer an opportunity to a determined Republican to unseat her. Time will tell.
