Sinn Fein and the Independents are set to decimate the Labor Party and Fianna Fail at the European elections next week – with cannabis user Luke ‘Ming’ Flanagan certain to win a seat.
The latest Millward Brown opinion poll for the Irish Independent indicates big gains for Sinn Fein and independent candidates in the constituencies outside Dublin. The recent Gerry Adams arrest does not appear to have damaged the party’s prospects.
Flanagan, a self confessed cannabis supporter who already holds a seat in the Irish parliament, is set to follow Sinn Fein’s Matt Carthy into Europe in the
Ireland Midlands-North-West constituency.
Fianna Fail is in danger of failing to win a seat in the same constituency as candidates Pat The Cope Gallagher and Thomas Byrne are dividing the party vote according to the poll.
Fianna Fail leader Micheal Martin is under increasing pressure ahead of the European elections and a failure to win a seat here would raise further questions about his leadership.
Sinn Fein’s Matt Carthy continues to lead the field in Ireland MNW on 19 per cent, followed by the controversial Flanagan on 15pc.
Flanagan was one of a number of Independent TDs who highlighted the allegations of police whistleblowers, which have come to a head in recent weeks.
Fine Gael’s Mairead McGuinness has picked up to 13 per cent in the same constituency and is l well ahead of her running mate Jim Higgins whose support has dropped substantially to 6 per cent according to the paper.
Independent MEP Marian Harkin remains on 12 per cent but the report says she remains the most attractive candidate for second preferences in the constituency.
Fianna Fail fears are increasing with Gallagher on 10 per cent followed closely by his running mate Byrne on 9 per cent. The Irish Independent report says the party’s candidates have a quota between them but will have to transfer tightly.
Fianna Fail MEP Brian Crowley will again top the poll in Ireland South remains despite a slight drop in support to 32 per cent.
Sinn Fein’s Liadh Ni Riada is also set to win a seat on 16 per cent with sitting Fine Gael MEP Sean Kelly now ahead of his running mates on 15 per cent.
His party colleagues Deirdre Clune, on 10 per cent, and Simon Harris on 9 per cent, will contest the third seat with Labour Party MEP Phil Prendergast out of the picture on 6 per cent and Independent Diarmuid O’Flynn down to 4 per cent while Fianna Fail candidate Kieran Hartley is on just 2 per cent.
