US President Joe Biden leaned into his Irish roots as he railed against former President Donald Trump during a campaign event on Sunday, February 4.

Biden, who asked attendees at the private residence in Henderson, Nevada to "imagine the nightmare" if Trump returns to office, referenced how Trump canceled a visit to the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery in France, a WWII cemetery where Americans are buried, in 2018.

While Trump claimed bad weather was to blame, The Atlantic reported in 2020 that Trump had told senior staff that morning: “Why should I go to that cemetery? It’s filled with losers.”

According to The Atlantic, Trump, in a separate conversation on the same trip, also referred to the more than 1,800 marines who lost their lives at Belleau Wood as “suckers” for getting killed.

Biden, whose late son Beau served in Iraq, told attendees on Sunday: “I’m — got to hold my Irish temper.

"I’m glad I wasn’t with him because I’m not sure what I’d have done.

“He said they’re all a bunch of 'suckers' and 'losers.'

“My son was not a sucker, nor were any of yours.

"Who does this guy think he is talking about Americans like that?”

Biden, whose ancestors came from Co Mayo and Co Louth and made an official visit to Ireland last spring, frequently touts his Irish roots, even the stereotypes like an "Irish temper."

Last July, Alex Thompson of Axios took a look at Biden's temper: "Behind closed doors, Biden has such a quick-trigger temper that some aides try to avoid meeting alone with him. Some take a colleague, almost as a shield against a solo blast."

(Thompson did note: "Some Biden aides think the president would be better off occasionally displaying his temper in public as a way to assuage voter concerns that the 80-year-old president is disengaged and too old for the office.")

Speaking with CNN after his report, Thompson said: "And he [Biden] already had that, as he calls, you know, get his Irish up.

"He already had that Irish temper, you know, really lay into people and in some cases, you know, make them feel humiliated, make them feel embarrassed, and really feel like and truly be cussed out."
