Marriage Equality hashtag tweeted 27,000 times in 24 hours as world pays attention to history in the making.

Ireland’s HometoVote hashtag has made it to the Twitter wall of fame at Twitter's headquarters in San Francisco following May 22nd’s massive turnout and Yes win in the Marriage Equality vote.

The hashtag HometoVote was tweeted 27,000 times within 24 hours as hundreds of Irish expats came from all over the world to have their say in the Marriage Equality and Presidential Age referendum. This means there were 97 tweets per minute talking about #HometoVote.

The head of Twitter in Ireland, Stephen McIntyre tweeted, “Once in a while we put a globally significant hashtag on our wall in San Fran HQ."

Twitter’s wall of honor has been used in the past to illustrate hashtags or twittersphere events that have swept across the globe. For example back in August 2014 #Ferguson was painted on the wall. In October 2014 Emma Watson’s #HeforShe took its place following her moving speech at the United Nations.

Have #HometoVote on the wall just shows how the historic Marriage Equality referendum grabbed the world’s attention.
