Just 7% of people have said they would vote for Conor McGregor to become the next President of Ireland, according to a new poll on the most likely candidates to succeed Michael D Higgins.

The former UFC fighter has expressed his desire to run for the ceremonial role later in the year, promising that he will ‘fix’ the Constitution.

While the Crumlin man has plenty of cash to front his bid to Áras, he lacks the political clout needed to win the race to be the next Irish President.

In order to run for the office, candidates must be an Irish citizen over the age of 35 years old. They must also receive a nomination from at least 20 members of the Oireachtas — either TDs or Senators — or from four local authorities.

With McGregor seeming unlikely to receive that number of nominations, a new poll from Sunday Independent/ Ireland Thinks revealed that 69% of people surveyed would be less likely to vote for their local TD or councillor if they supported the fighter.

The poll also stated that just 7% of people would vote for the father-of-four, while 3% were unsure.

86% of people surveyed said he should not be given a nomination by local authorities, TDs or senators while 78% said US President Donald Trump had disrespected Ireland by inviting McGregor to the White House on St Patrick’s Day.

The Dubliner arrived to the White House for an ‘important meeting‘ on March 17, much to the surprise of the people of Ireland.

The visit came after President Trump namechecked McGregor as one of his ‘favourite’ Irish people during the Taoiseach’s visit the week previous.

Mairead McGuinness solidified herself as the favourite to become the next President, topping the poll on candidates most likely to get the vote.

Independent TD Catherine Connolly was also a popular potential candidate with 16% of respondents confirming they would vote for her.
