"All grace to god, my friends, my family, my support team, Athletics Ireland, all the fans in the crowd cheering me on, everybody."

Meanwhile, Adeleke’s teammate Sharlene Mawdsley, from Co Tipperary, finished eighth in the same event with a time of 51.59. It was Mawdsley's first championship final as an individual.

Adeleke and Mawdsley were joined in the top ten by fellow Irish athlete Sophie Becker, the Co Wexford native who placed tenth in the Women's 400m with the second-fastest time of her career.
