Ryan Ndede, 23, appeared at Belfast Magistrates’ Court this morning, Friday, February 21, facing charges relating to the fatal assault of Quham Babatunde in Dublin City on Saturday morning, February 15.

Ndede, from Boroimhe Birches in Swords, Co Dublin, has been charged with the murder of 34-year-old Quham Babatunde.

No bail application was made and Ndede was remanded into custody. He is due to appear at Belfast Magistrates' Court via video link on March 21.

An application for legal aid was granted.

Ndede is the third man to be charged in relation to the incident at South Anne Street/Duke Lane Upper in Dublin 2 in the early hours of February 15.

The PA reported that on Friday, the court heard that Ndede was arrested onboard a ferry from Belfast to Birkenhead on Sunday evening, the day after the fatal assault.

David McNeill, representing Northern Ireland’s Public Prosecution Service (PPS), told Deputy District Judge Alan White that the murder happened during a “group melee” on the street.

“The defendant can be seen on CCTV approaching the deceased with a knife concealed under his puffer jacket, which he produces and stabs him four times, once to the heart, which proves to be the fatal wound,” he said.

McNeill said CCTV then tracked Ndede moving through the streets, arriving in a rented apartment in the Dublin 8 area approximately 25 minutes later.

McNeill said that while Ndede was no longer wearing a jacket, he was identifiable by other clothing. He added that a knife was recovered at the apartment and that forensic tests were being carried out to establish if it was the murder weapon.

McNeill said that Ndede had been identified on CCTV by two members of the Garda.

“He arrived by bus in Belfast on Sunday afternoon and boarded a ferry that evening to Birkenhead,” McNeill said.

“The ferry was turned around and he was arrested on the ferry.”

Ndede is the third person to be charged and remanded into custody in relation to the fatal assault in Dublin on Saturday.

On Saturday, An Garda Síochána said that shortly after 3 am that morning, Gardaí and emergency services responded to an incident where a man, since named locally as Quaham Babatunde, was found with serious injuries and unresponsive.
