Spanish police had to intervene after Ryanair crew had to restrain a man in an air rage incident.

The budget airline confirmed that the incident took place on board a flight from Cork to the Canary Islands last weekend.

The Irish Examiner reports that the air crew had to call for backup from local police when they landed on the Spanish island.

One eyewitness told the paper that other passengers were traumatized by the behavior of the man.

The report adds that the eyewitness said the man had to be forcibly restrained by Ryanair cabin crew.

He was arrested by local police when the plane landed in Gran Canaria.

A statement from Ryanair confirmed: “The crew requested police assistance on arrival at Gran Canaria after a passenger became disruptive in-flight.

“Police removed and detained the individual from the aircraft upon arrival in Gran Canaria.

“We apologized to other passengers for any inconvenience and that the safety and comfort of its customers, crew and aircraft is its priority.

“The airline will not tolerate unruly or disruptive behavior at any time. The matter is now in the hands of local police.”

Just under two hundred passengers were on board the flight on a Boeing 737.

The latest incident comes just months after the 41-year-old niece of fashion icon Ralph Lauren was charged in Shannon with an air rage incident on board a New York bound flight from Barcelona.

Jennifer Lauren was fined for pushing an air hostess and swearing at airline staff on board a Delta Air Lines flight.

The plane had to be diverted to Shannon Airport last January at a cost of $44,000 to the airline.
