Police continue the hunt for human remains along the coastline of Long Island following the discovery of nine bodies. This is believed to be the work of a serial killer. The hunt is being led by Irish-born police chief Richard Dormer.
Over the coming days officials from the Nassau County Police Department and New York State Polices will be joining the search on Ocean Parkway.
Last winter this search began because Shannan Gilbert, from New Jersey, had been reported missing.
Hers were the fifth remains to be found in the area. Her family is now on their way to the site where the bodies were found. Although the Suffolk Police have said that their visit is not related to the investigation NBC has reported that they will make a media appearance.
Gilbert a prostitute, who advertised on the classified website Craigslist just like the first four victims identified, was last seen last May near Oak Beach. She had met with a client and has not been seen since.
The first four victims were identified as Amber Lynn Costello, 27, originally of Wilmington, N.C, Megan Waterman, 22, of Scarborough, Maine, Maureen Brainard-Barnes, 28, of Norwich, Conn and Melissa Barthelemy, 24, of Buffalo, N.Y.
Sherre Gilbert, Shannan sister said "Every time the phone rings, your heart pounds…I am still hoping for the best but preparing for the worst. Police have promised to keep searching until they find my sister."
The original four bodies were discovered some miles up the beach. The police are now using ladder trucks, binoculars and swarms of searchers and investigators to scour the area. The police have now widened their search, since the last three victims were discovered.
