A second man has been charged in relation to the assault that occurred in Dublin on O'Connell Street and Cathal Brugha Street in the early hours of Sunday morning, June 23.
The man, who Gardaí said was arrested on Thursday, June 27, is the second to be charged in the scope of the investigation that has left the victim, reported to be a tourist from Canada, in a serious condition.
Four men have now been arrested as part of the investigation - two, aged in their 20s and 30s, were arrested on Sunday near the scene of the assault, and another man, also in his 30s, was arrested on Monday.
Both of the men in their 30s have been released without charge, but the man in his 20s - since named as Madalin Ghiuzan - was charged on Monday with two counts of assault causing harm. He was refused bail and remanded into custody.
The fourth man, also in his 20s, was charged on Friday morning the day after he was arrested.
Gardaí said on Thursday that the victim, aged in his 40s, who was injured in the assault on Sunday remains in hospital in a serious condition.
In their initial witness appeal on Sunday, Gardaí said they were alerted to two incidents involving a number of individuals on Cathal Brugha Street and O’Connell Street Upper at about 1 am that morning.
The man who was injured was taken to the Mater Hospital to be treated for "serious injuries."
In court on Monday, Garda Sergeant Sean McCarthy said that at 12:40 am on Sunday, Ghiuzan was at Cathal Brugha Street with friends when the injured party approached him.
The court heard they had no prior contact, and they "engaged in a conversation" before two alleged assaults took place.
On Thursday, Gardaí continued their appeal to any individuals who were in the Cathal Brugha Street area, near the Living Room Bar, between 12:40 am and 1 am and any individuals who were on O’Connell Street Upper near the Spar Shop / Funland / Tourism Office, opposite the Spire, between 12:40 am and 1 am on Sunday morning to contact them.
Anyone who has camera footage (including dash cam) is asked to make this available to Gardaí.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Store Street Garda Station on 01 666 8000, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station.
Investigations are ongoing.
