Shane Lowry has come under fire from his US fans as he adamantly states that his children will never be American citizens.

The sportsman and his wife Wendy are both from Offaly and have been together since 2012, now residing stateside alongside their daughters Iris and Ivy.

Despite loving his life in America, Shane isn’t seeking citizenship anytime soon, choosing to raise his children, first and foremost, as Irish.

Chatting with TikTok user Golf Tips for the Average Joe, Lowry was quick to shut down any speculation that his children might identify as American.

"No. Hell no," he laughed when asked if they were citizens.

"I had to go to Home Depot the other day to get something and my six-year-old was with me and she picked up this American flag and started waving it and I’m like 'put that down.'"

While it’s clear he was joking around, Shane’s comments were met with anger and disdain from his US fans.

"Go back to Ireland then," one user wrote.

"Ya, disrespect the country that has made you millions," another added.

"Takes our money and trashes the country. Hypocrisy," a third penned.

Despite the backlash, many found the humour in the remarks, seeing that Shane is simply a proud Irish man.

"Why are some people upset? it’s not that deep have a laugh,’ one fan wrote, while another echoed the sentiment adding: ‘Proud Irishman right there.’

Lowry made his return to Ireland over the Christmas period as his brother Alan tied the knot.

Alan and his partner Amy said ‘I do’ in a gorgeous ceremony at the Mount Falcon Hotel in Ballina, Co Mayo at the beginning of this year.
