Shaun Brady, a 45-year-old chef from Nenagh, Co Tipperary who was well-known in Kansas City, tragically died after being shot on Wednesday, August 28.

The Kansas City Police Department said on Wednesday that officers responded at about 5:18 pm that evening to a reported shooting on 63rd and Rockhill.

Upon arrival, officers located an adult male victim, Brady, in a back parking lot adjacent to several businesses. He was suffering from gunshot wounds and officers began performing life-saving measures.

Emergency medical personnel responded and transported Brady to a local hospital, where he was subsequently pronounced deceased.

Police said that a preliminary investigation revealed Brady was taking out trash when he observed multiple subjects by a vehicle. An interaction between the victim and subjects occurred that led to the victim being shot.

KCPD said on Wednesday that the incident is being investigated as a homicide.

Detectives are interviewing several witnesses and reviewing any available surveillance footage. Crime scene personnel are processing the scene for physical evidence.

On Thursday, KCPD said that within an hour of the incident occurring on Wednesday eveing, two juvenile male teen subjects were taken into custody pending further investigation in regard to the case.

The vehicle used in the crime was also recovered. The subjects were taken into custody and the vehicle was found a short distance away in Midtown.

Investigators will be working with prosecutors for them to determine applicable charges. The case remains ongoing.

Brady opened his restaurant Brady's KC in the Brookside area of Kansas City in 2022. Ahead of his restaurant's opening, Brady spoke with IrishCentral, where he was emphatic that his restaurant was Irish American, not just Irish.

On social media on Thursday, the restaurant posted: "Our hearts are broken. There are no words to express our sadness, anger and frustration. Our community is with Shaun's family - forever.

"We appreciate the outpouring of support, offers to help, and your love. Together we are united. Together we will grieve. Together we will heal.

"We ask that you show compassion and aid in our healing by respecting the privacy of Shaun's family.

"Thank you.

"Ar scáth a chéile a mhaireann na daoine. [People live in each other's shadow]."

A popular figure within the local Irish American community, Brady was a fixture at the Kansas City Irish Fest which is due to place this Sunday.

The Kansas City Irish Fest Board of Directors said on Thursday that they are heartbroken to hear of the loss of their "dear friend and colleague."

"Shaun was the head chef and creator of the Kansas City Irish Breakfast, a joyful tradition following our Catholic Mass the Sunday of the festival weekend," the Board of Directors said.

"Although Kansas City Irish Fest will take place this weekend, we have decided to cancel the Irish Breakfast to give those who knew and loved Shaun a chance to gather and remember him."

Brady is survived by his wife, Kate, a native of Wichita, whom he met in Ireland while she was living there. They relocated to Kansas in 2013. Brady was also a father, Fox News reports.

Reacting to the murder of the Irish chef, Brady’s long-time friend Pat O’Neill told Fox4 News: “The Irish community is totally stunned.

"He was a beloved figure, a native of Ireland, just a generous do anything for anyone kind of guy, so, a lot of us again, stunned, praying, angry, wondering why."
