The Spike Island Fireworks Event will light up Cork Harbour in July in celebration of the 86th anniversary of the handover of the island from Britain.

300 fireworks will illuminate the sky on July 13, symbolizing the inmates who tragically lost their lives during Spike Island’s history as a prison in what promises to be a special tribute and a poignant reminder of the island’s past.

Although Ireland gained independence from Britain in 1922, Spike Island remained under British Sovereignty as part of the Anglo-Irish Agreement and was not handed over until July 11, 1938.

Used as a fortress to protect Cork Harbour against invasion during British rule in Ireland, Spike Island was transformed into a prison and convict depot in 1847 to house convicts prior to penal transportation during the Irish Famine.

The prison expanded in the years following the Famine and was "probably the biggest prison in the British Empire," according to Cork historians Cal McCarthy and Barra O'Donnabhain. The prison later became known as "Ireland's Alcatraz."

The 86th anniversary celebrations will feature pop-up musical performers, face-painting, and activities for guests of all ages on Spike Island.

Attendance on Spike Island will be capped for the event and demand is likely to be high, so anyone interested in attending is encouraged to book tickets in advance.

Visitors will embark on a ferry journey across Cork Harbour and enjoy a guided tour on arrival, offering detailed insights into the island's remarkable history before exploring the fort, museums, and exhibitions.

They will also be able to explore the island’s stunning walking trail with breathtaking views as the sun sets before the fireworks display kicks off as darkness falls.

Boats will begin departing from the mainland at 5:15 pm, with early arrivals able to take in the island's surroundings and avail of one of the first transports back to the mainland after the event concludes.

Return boats will begin departing at 10:30 pm. and will depart every ten minutes, with the final boat departing the island at 11:45 pm.
