Team Ireland is coming home from the 2024 European Champions with four medals - two gold and two silvers - which is the Irish team's best showing ever.

The medal haul grew on Wednesday evening after Sophie Becker, Rhasidat Adeleke, Phil Healy, and Sharlene Mawdsley claimed the silver medal in the Women's 4x400m Relay.

The team of Irish runners set a new Irish national record of 3:22.71 in the process, smashing the previous record by 1.7 seconds.

Despite the hugely impressive finishing time, Ireland's 4x400m Women's Relay team narrowly missed out on gold, finishing just .39 seconds behind the team from The Netherlands.

Wednesday’s silver medal comes after the Irish mixed 4x400m relay team won gold last Friday, Ciara Mageean won gold in the 1500m on Sunday, and Rhasidat Adeleke claimed silver in the 400m on Monday.

Team Ireland also set three Irish national records (Mixed 4x400m Relay, Women's 4x400m Relay, Women's 400m), 12 season bests, and three personal bests throughout the European Championships this year.

This year was Team Ireland's best-ever showing at the European Championships, surpassing its three medals won Budapest in 1998.

Additionally, before this week in Rome, only one Irish athlete had ever won gold in the event’s 90-year history – Sonia O’Sullivan.

Elsewhere on Wednesday - the final day of the European Championships - Team Ireland had five competitors in the Men's 10,000m and one competitor in the Men's 1500m.

In the Men's 10,000m, Efrem Gidey finished in 12th, Brian Fay finished 20th, Barry Keane finished 21st, Peter Lynch finished 22nd, and Cormac Dalton finished 24th.

In the Men's 1500m, Andrew Coscoran finished in 13th.
