A truck, carrying potentially explosive materials, crashed into the storefront of Donavan's shop, in Moneygall, Offaly on Thursday morning. President Barack Obama has plans to visit the town, his ancestral home next month.
Police reported that the truck, carrying components for industrial explosives hit the front of the store at 8am. The Donavan family also own Obama's ancestral family home, where he plans to visit in May.
"The firemen I spoke to were particularly concerned about what was in the truck but thankfully it seems that the detonators were in a different section," Canon Stephen Neill told Journal.ie. "There was an air of bemusement generally, especially as John Donovan who owns the shop also owns the house which is Obama’s ancestral home."
The family plan to fix the shop front in time for Obama's visit next month.
It has been confirmed that Obama will visit his ancestral family home along with the Anglican Church where his great-great-great grandfather Fulmuth Kearney was baptized. Kearney fled Ireland in 1850 during the Great Famine. He travelled to New York before he eventually settled in Chicago.
