US President Donald Trump suggested that Doonbeg in Co Clare, where he owns a luxury golf resort, is in the United Kingdom.
The President made the gaffe while hosting the UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer at the White House yesterday, Thursday, February 27.
During a press briefing in the Oval Office, Trump was asked: "Mr. President, you obviously can do business with our Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
"You said yesterday [Wednesday] that the EU was constructed to screw the US when it comes to trade.
"What can our Prime Minister say to you to persuade you not to impose tariffs on the United Kingdom?"
Trump questioned the reporter if he used the word "screw." He did. According to the White House transcript and video, he used it twice.
After explaining his problems with both the EU and NATO, Trump told the reporter on Thursday: "We're here for a different reason, we're talking about a very different place.
"This is some place that I have, I have investments there.
"I own Turnberry [in Scotland] I own Aberdeen [in Scotland], and I own a great place called Doonbeg in Ireland so, you know, I have a great, warm spot for your country."
Ireland is not in the UK.
The gaffe came the same day that the White House reportedly issued a press invitation that referred to Starmer as "the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and Ireland."
Starmer is the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. He is not the Prime Minister of Ireland; Ireland is not in the UK.
The White House just sent out this email approving me for today’s press conference with @realDonaldTrump and @Keir_Starmer.
Something seems off.
