Ireland's Ambassador to the US Geraldine Byrne Nason will represent Ireland at the inauguration of US President-elect Donald Trump on Monday, January 20.

When asked if any Irish politicians were invited and attending Trump's inauguration, a spokesperson for Ireland's Department of Foreign Affairs told IrishCentral: "Ireland will be represented by our Ambassador to the United States of America Geraldine Byrne Nason."

The spokesperson added: "Ireland is committed to strengthening our constructive bilateral relations with the US, with whom we have strong economic, cultural and historic ties.

"We have worked with successive US administrations on issues of mutual interest and key priorities over the years, including the previous term of President Trump.

"We look forward to continuing this with the next Administration."

Co Louth native Byrne Nason assumed her role as Ireland’s 19th Ambassador to the US in August 2022.

In 2021, Ireland's then-Ambassador to the US Dan Mulhall attended the inauguration of Joe Biden:

Responding to Trump's election in November, Ambassador Byrne Nason extended her congratulations:

Earlier, in July, Ambassador Byrne Nason was on hand at the Republican National Convention to watch Trump accept his formal nomination:

Just days prior, the Ambassador posted a picture with Trump's son Eric not long after the assassination attempt on the former President:

Meanwhile, on Friday morning, Trump announced on his Truth Social platform that his inauguration is being moved indoors due to predicted cold weather.

"The weather forecast for Washington, D.C., with the windchill factor, could take temperatures into severe record lows," he wrote. "There is an Arctic blast sweeping the Country.

"I don’t want to see people hurt, or injured, in any way. It is dangerous conditions for the tens of thousands of Law Enforcement, First Responders, Police K9s and even horses, and hundreds of thousands of supporters that will be outside for many hours on the 20th (In any event, if you decide to come, dress warmly!)."

Trump said he has ordered his inauguration address, in addition to prayers and other speeches, to be delivered in the Rotunda of the US Capitol.

"The various Dignitaries and Guests will be brought into the Capitol," he added.

Trump further said: "We will open Capital One Arena on Monday for LIVE viewing of this Historic event, and to host the Presidential Parade. I will join the crowd at Capital One, after my Swearing In."

The last time the US presidential inauguration was held indoors was in 1985 for President Ronald Reagan's inauguration, also due to extreme cold.

Outgoing President Joe Biden and First Lady Dr. Jill Biden are set to attend the inauguration on Monday, as are former Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush and former First Ladies Hillary Clinton and Laura Bush.

Former President Barack Obama is also set to attend, though his wife, former First Lady Michelle Obama, will not.

In 2021, after losing the 2020 US presidential election, outgoing President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump did not attend Biden's inauguration.
