U2 singer Bono has been urged to rest by a leading heart specialist after a bad health scare on vacation in the South of France.

The frontman of the world’s biggest rock band was taken to hospital in Monaco by his concerned wife Ali after he experienced heart palpitations and chest pain.

Bono was rushed to the hospital on Wednesday after he complained of the chest pains.

The Sunday Independent reports that Bono spent a number of hours at the Princess Grace Memorial Hospital in Monaco but wasn’t kept in overnight after he underwent tests and examinations.

“As I understand it he was seen by a doctor. He is okay now but he got a fright,” a source told the paper.

The Independent also reports that a leading heart specialist examined the singer and told him to get plenty of rest after a grueling world tour that saw U2 perform to 7.1 million fans in 30 countries.

Bono was spotted on Friday night relaxing in Monaco’s exclusive nightspot Saas Cafe with wife Ali, singer Julian Lennon and Irish designer John Rocha.

Joint owner of a luxury villa outside Monaco with The Edge, Bono is expected to remain in the South of France for some weeks.

Last year he underwent back surgery after he injured himself during training for the band’s physically demanding tour.

Bono also hit the headlines most recently when his Facebook stake quadrupled in value to nearly $1bn.
