A woman in her 20s has died after falling from the Cliffs of Moher in County Clare.

The woman was believed to have been visiting the popular tourist attraction with three friends when she fell from the cliffs on Saturday afternoon.

The Irish Times reports that the woman lost her footing and fell. One of the woman's friends raised the alarm at about 1:20 p.m.

The Irish Coast Guard's marine rescue center on Valentia Island in County Kerry was contacted at 1:20 p.m. and coordinated a search and rescue operation, while the Shannon-based search and rescue helicopter Rescue 115 was contacted at 1:23 p.m.

The rescue helicopter subsequently located the woman's body in the water but was unable to safely recover it.

The Aran Islands' RNLI lifeboat recovered the woman's body shortly after 3 p.m.

Members of the Doolin Coast Guard also attended the scene as well as gardaí and other emergency services.

"Gardaí and emergency services conducted an operation following reports of an incident at the Cliffs Moher this afternoon," a Garda spokesperson confirmed in a statement.

The group of friends was reportedly made up of different nationalities and not based in Ireland, according to the Irish Times.

The woman's body is expected to be transferred to University Hospital Limerick for a postmortem examination.

At their highest point, the Cliffs of Moher stand at about 712 ft (214 meters), while they measure 390 ft (120 meters) at Hags Head, close to where Saturday's accident took place.

A small number of fatalities have occurred at the tourist attraction in recent years.

In January 2019, a 26-year-old Indian man fell to his death while taking photographs at the cliffs, while a Hungarian man in his 20s died in June 2007 after falling while taking photographs.
