"I thought she was a 28-year-old heterosexual girl, because that's what she looked like to me. And she's a 40-year-old gay woman,” said O’Donnell in an ABC Nightline interview that airs tonight.
But perhaps O’Donnell’s initial misconception led her in the right direction. Rosie goes on to say that "I think if I had known that she was gay, I wouldn't have been brave enough to talk to her.”
"She didn't look like any lesbian I'd ever met," said O’Donnell. "But it's fun and very exciting."

Rosie opens up to People.com about her recent hormone therapy, which has made life much more “joyful” for her. She said how she’s menopausal and susceptible to hot flashes, but her therapist offered another explanation for the heat: "She said, ' [It's] because you're also in love.' "
However this isn’t the first time Rosie’s found love. The television personality was with partner Kelli Carpenter from 2004 through 2007 and the couple had four children together.
Rosie’s new girlfriend Michelle Rounds is a corporate head hunter for an IT firm in New York City. The couple is described as “adorable and very, very happy” by a friend.
O’Donnell’s new show “The Rosie Show” is set to premiere October 10 on Oprah Winfrey’s network OWN. The show is described as a nightly talk show and O’Donnell helps to build off of Winfrey’s 25 year legacy.
