A Facebook campaign has renamed Ballina, Co. Mayo as the “Gridlock Capital of Ireland”. The page has been set up in response to the town's new traffic system layout.
The webpage is being used as a platform for retailers, shoppers and drivers who are against the new traffic layout. The Facebook page also features photographs of the town's main streets taken during peak shopping times showing few shoppers visible.
The new one-way routes are proving to be very unpopular with locals who are voicing their frustration on the Facebook page.
Locals are insisting that the new layout system is driving people out of the town. One Facebook member left a post saying she missed a job interview because of the gridlock while another said she has started to shop in nearby Castlebar as it was “less hassle”.
