In recent research conducted by the Harris Poll, women voted Irish as the sexiest accent around.
So given the gift of the blarney, there are few things like an Irish brogue.
As an Irish person living abroad, it’s common to get interrupted mid sentence with the statement, “Is that an accent I hear?”
For many the Irish accent is difficult to understand as they mock our Darby O’Gill twang, but for others our unique drawl is a source of admiration.
And so, as our popular tones infiltrate the world, the question remains -- who has the best Irish accent?
Does it go to the Dubs, the Corkonians or the lads from Barnsmore Gap in Donegal?
Is it Mary from the Liberties who sells you your fish on Moore Street in Dublin, or Sophia from Milltown behind the counter in Brown Thomas?
Una from Mayo, who sells you rosary beads in the gift shop at Knock?
Mike from Galway, who gives you advice on the best oysters around, or Tony from Belfast who offers you directions to Victoria Hall?
For a small country Ireland has a rich tapestry of accents. Combing the Emerald Isle and sampling the accents on offer, it seems that the Dublin accent is most popular.
A recent survey conducted by budget hotel group Travelodge asked 1,000 hotel guests which Irish accent they liked best.
A whopping 31 percent of participants said they preferred the Dublin accent. Coming in second was Cork with 18 percent of the vote; Galway was close behind with 16 percent.
The southerners proved popular too, with Kerry nabbing 10 percent. Donegal had a poor performance with only 7 percent while Limerick received 6 percent.
But overall Ireland’s capital came out on top, with 17 percent of respondents saying the Dublin accent oozes sex appeal.
The three Irishmen with the most popular accents all came from the Big Smoke as Bono, Colin Farrell and Ronan Keating topped the polls.
