Tommy Hilfiger, one of the world's leading designers with his self-named brand of basically everything from clothing to items for the home, was in Ireland last week for some business - visiting two of his stores - and some pleasure - hosting a dinner party to celebrate his visit, and proclaiming his Irish roots.

"I am thrilled to be opening a new sportswear store in Dublin. My visit honors the union of two nations that are not only rooted through history, but also through the connection of my ancestral family," said Hilfiger, who was accompanied by his fiance, Dee Ocleppo.

Apparently Tommy, 57, has a few Irish grannies in his ultra-stylish back pocket. According to the Irish Independent, his maternal great-grandmother was a Cahill, from Cork, and his paternal great grandfather, James Gerrity, was from Mayo, and moved to Wisconsin.

Hilfiger arrived in Ireland via Cannes. Before traveling to Dublin he stopped at his store in Galway to meet his fans.

The couple stayed at the Merrion Hotel during their two days in Dublin, and hosted a dinner in Co. Kildare for some Irish friends, including director Jim Sheridan.

Hilfiger also appeared at Trinity College, where he received an honorary patronage from the Philosophical Society.
