It’s almost 40 years since Ireland’s first heart transplant was performed at the Mater Hospital in Dublin...
And now, just as it was then, kindness and compassion like yours makes life-saving medical advances in Ireland like this possible…
It was probably a Tuesday like any other for you. But on September 10, 1985, Dr Maurice Neligan, a pioneer of Irish medicine, performed alongside fellow surgeons the first heart transplant in Ireland’s history. That day would see the first of many lives saved…
Like Eddie from Co Louth who was one of the first people to have this groundbreaking surgery. And Patrick from Dublin, who was just eleven when he became the youngest person to have a heart transplant.
Since then, more than 420 lives have been saved in the Mater Hospital thanks to heart transplant surgery. Thanks to the generosity of kind people like you.

Since opening its doors in September 1861, the Mater Hospital has been the stage for many of the most life-saving advances in medicine and patient care in all of Ireland —
The first X-rays, the first open heart surgery, the first heart transplant, the first breast cancer screening program, the first double lung and liver transplant, the list goes on...
Countless lives saved and extended.
Saved by caring hearts like you, who know what it means to take care of someone in the most fragile moments of their life.
Thoughtful people like yourself who understand that healthcare must be protected and guarded because lives depend on it.
And it's in honor of that same spirit of kindness that has kept the Mater strong for so many decades that I feel I can ask you this question –
Please, will you consider making a gift to the Mater Hospital Foundation in your Will?
Your family always comes first. But after your loved ones are taken care of, a gift of just 1% or 2% of your estate to the Mater Hospital Foundation would see your love and compassion — the most beautiful and essential parts of yourself — live on within our centuries-old walls for hundreds of years to come.
With a gift in your Will, you’ll be investing in a 163-year history. Our deep roots in the story of Ireland. The latest technology bringing patients the relief of a faster diagnosis and more effective treatment. The best and brightest and kindest nurses and doctors. The dignity and respect of the best possible patient care. Groundbreaking medical advances. And of course, love...
